Adam Smith, James Hutton and Joseph Black: Modest Men Who Changed the World
Adam Smith, James Hutton and Joseph Black were among the most influential thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment. Though modest in character, their ideas transformed the world and continue to shape our understanding of economics, science, geology and society today.
Join us at Panmure House for a fascinating evening exploring the lives, achievements and enduring legacy of these remarkable figures. The event will begin with an illustrated lecture by distinguished journalist, author and biographer Raymond Perman FRSE, whose work has brought fresh attention to the interconnected stories of these great Scottish innovators.
The lecture will be followed by a response from Professor Colin Campbell FRSE of the James Hutton Institute and an engaging panel discussion exploring the intellectual connections between Smith, Hutton and Black, their place within the Scottish Enlightenment, and the relevance of their ideas in the modern world chaired by Professor Chris Turney, Deputy Principal Research and Innovation at Heriot-Watt University. Audience members will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session.
Following the discussion and audience Q&A, guests are invited to join the speakers and fellow attendees for further conversation and a celebratory drink in the Interpretation Suite.
This event is presented in partnership with Adam Smith's Panmure House, The James Hutton Institute, and Heriot-Watt University.
